Sensory play

Newborn babies learn through the touch of their mother’s skin, developing until as pre-schoolers they are making use of all their five senses. As children grow, different textures become highly interesting. That’s why we make sure that our babies and toddlers have access to various fabric textures like fur, silk, leather, velvet, chamois, foam rubber and netting allowing them to explore their sense of touch.

Unlike adult eyes which can distinguish millions of different shades of light and colour, baby's eyes can only detect large contrasts between light and dark, or black and white, so in our nurseries you’ll find special areas with specific visual stimulation for your babies.

Preschoolers learn and explore the world through their senses of touch, sight, smell, taste, and hearing. In caring for your children, it is our job to help them explore their senses by providing appropriate activities for sensory play and learning. That’s why, at our nurseries, all children are encouraged to use our special sensory resources, whether that be a dark room with coloured interactive lights and music, light boxes, sand boxes, shredded paper play or treasure baskets.

Messy play

Despite the heart palpitations many parents face when confronted with the words ‘messy play’ we know a wide range of these sensory experiences make an enormous contribution to babies and young children’s cognitive and creative development but don’t worry, we’ve got it covered!

Messy play helps children in so many ways, be that to relax, express their feelings, experiment with different materials, learn about texture, develop hand-eye coordination or practice the skills of pouring, measuring and mixing. Ultimately our experience has taught us that children love getting their hands dirty while exploring the world around them.

In both of our nurseries you will find messy play areas packed with paint, sand, water, aromas, cornflakes, soap flakes and other safe materials for early years play. Our babies love to experience bubbles, reaching out for them and watching them disappear provoking many a puzzled reaction whilst 3 year olds experiencing the powers of cornflower can provoke a similar reaction. We encourage our children to set their own challenges in messy play, enabling them to problem-solve, plan and see things through to completion.
